Sugar and other sweeteners are found in so many foods these days that it can be hard to avoid them. It takes savvy shopping and label reading to realize how much sugar you may be getting in your daily diet.

What happens when you eat high sugar foods

When we eat high sugar foods out body releases certain ‘feel good’ chemicals that give a sense of well being for a short time. The problem is the more sugar we eat the more we need to get the same type of ‘sugar rush’. It can have an addictive like nature in that the more sugar we eat, the more we want.

The sugar rush in a child can turn into a period of almost hyperactivity. Also followed by the subsequent sugar crash. In adults, we don’t often get that rush of hyperactivity. It is the chemical rush that builds the sugar addiction. Adults get the crash period too which tends to trigger the desire to eat more sugar.

The Dangers of A High Sugar Diet

Soon after eating a high sugar food, we see an increase in blood glucose also known as blood sugar levels. This causes the pancreas to secrete insulin to lower the blood sugar back to normal levels.

To keep it as simple as possible, insulin ’pushes’ the sugars into the cells to be burned. The problem is that if there is excess sugar, meaning sugar is higher than our metabolic needs, it will be converted to fat. The cells expand and with that, our waistlines tend to expand as well.

Insulin Resistance

Over time and with frequently high blood sugar levels we can develop a condition called Insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is when our body requires more insulin to get the same blood sugar lowering effect. Our cells just don’t respond to insulin as well as they did previously. The pancreas produces more insulin in an effort to lower blood sugar.

This tends to develop as we age, with high calorie, high carbohydrate/sugar diets, and with a sedentary lifestyle. Some people may be genetically predisposed to high blood sugar levels and we often see that diabetes. Which is beyond typical insulin resistance can tend to run in families.

When the body is continuously producing high levels of insulin and even with more production, blood glucose levels stay higher than they should be eventually health problems can begin to occur.

This may be the precursor to full blown type II diabetes, also known as adult onset diabetes. It can also lead to a variety of health conditions that often get labeled as metabolic syndrome.

A full description of metabolic syndrome is beyond the scope of this article. Many of the health concerns of metabolic syndrome can at least improve with a lower sugar diet.

How to Increase Insulin Sensitivity

Reducing Sugar Intake- If we eat a lower sugar diet, our body produces less insulin and eventually our cells become more receptive or sensitive to the insulin we make. This will help to reduce blood sugar levels.

Using Supplements– The full breakdown, dosages and how to use supplements is beyond the scope of this article but that are some supplements that have been proven to raise your insulin sensitivity. They include:

  1. Resveratrol
  2. Chromium
  3. Alpha Lipoic Acid

If you are considering using any of these supplements it would be a good idea to do some of you own research. Certain if you are diabetic or using any medications that may affect your blood sugar, run supplement use past your doctor first.

Reduce Overall Carbohydrate Intake

Carbohydrates, even the slower burning ‘complex carbohydrates’ eventually digest down into sugars. High levels of carbohydrate will lead to excess insulin production.

The formation of triglycerides which will increase body fat levels and then reduce insulin sensitivity. Lower overall carbohydrate content to produce less insulin and keep sensitivity high.

Apple Cider Vinegar

There are a few studies that show the addition of a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar each day can improve sensitivity to insulin. You can add a few teaspoons to water and drink it a short time before your meals. Some people find a glass of water with two teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and a twist of lemon juice is a good ‘health tonic’ to have first thing in the morning. Apple cider vinegar is also a nice addition to your salads. Mix a little with some high quality olive oil for a dressing that has great flavor and great health benefits too.

Green Tea

The benefits of green tea and numerous. It can help boost the metabolism and improve your insulin sensitivity too. If you like a cup of tea anyway, make it green tea. Just remember, leave out the sweeteners including honey. Many people mistakenly believe that just because honey is a natural produce it is healthy to use.

Now for most people a teaspoon of honey is not a problem but it does cause an increase in blood sugar which then requires the body to boost insulin production to lower the blood sugar. Green tea is great but to derive the full benefits, skip all the sweeteners.

Herbs, Spices, and Cinnamon

Like using supplements mentioned above, there are herbs and plants that can boost insulin sensitivity. These include things like cinnamon which can significantly lower fasting blood sugar levels.

Curcumin and turmeric have been shown to boost insulin sensitivity. Gymnema is another that boosts insulin sensitivity and has the nice effect of making sweet foods taste bitter when placed on the tongue. Soluble fiber is another food product that may increase insulin sensitivity.
